How we research products
Our goal is to make useful buying information easier to evaluate while being precise about what we know, how we know it, and what remains uncertain.
Firsthand testing and community research are different
Firsthand testing means a named contributor personally used or owned the product and documented the conditions, duration, observations, and supporting original media. We label it as firsthand only after that record is reviewed.
Community research summarizes patterns found in approved public customer feedback, owner discussions, independent editorial sources, manufacturer documentation, and other permitted evidence. It is not our personal experience, and we do not present it as testing.
How community findings are synthesized
We group reports describing the same underlying experience, separate factual observations from opinions, and look for recurring praise, criticism, ownership patterns, useful context, and areas of disagreement. A finding must retain links to its approved evidence records inside RenderEngine before it can be reviewed for public use.
We do not publish source excerpts by default. Public summaries are written to describe the pattern without copying reviews or exposing private research notes.
How confidence levels work
Confidence is expressed as Low, Moderate, or High. The assessment considers independent evidence items, source diversity, recency, agreement, contradictory reports, source quality, duplication, product-version specificity, and usage context.
Confidence describes the strength of the available evidence. It does not prove that every buyer will have the same experience, and it is not a scientific probability.
How contradictory reports are handled
Meaningful disagreement is preserved instead of averaged away. We check whether reports concern different product versions, environments, expectations, installation methods, or usage patterns. When a conflict cannot be explained, the public finding says that reports differ and its confidence is reduced.
How sources are selected
Sources must be relevant to the exact product or clearly identified version, accessible for review, and permitted for the intended research use. We favor independent accounts and multiple source categories. Manufacturer and retailer information can establish listed specifications and claims, but does not by itself establish real-world outcomes.
How research is updated
Research may be reviewed when new approved evidence is added, a product version changes, earlier evidence becomes unavailable, a contradiction needs another look, or an editor requests a refresh. Updated findings create a new revision and require review; they do not silently replace approved material.

Corrections
To report a possible error, email [email protected] with the page URL, the detail you believe is incorrect, and a source we can review. Corrections are evaluated against the evidence record and material changes are published through a new revision.
